European Union representatives on Monday welcomed news that al-Qaeda's leader, Osama bin Laden, had been killed by a United States special operation in Pakistan, DPA reported.
Bin Laden "was a criminal responsible for heinous terrorist attacks" and " his death makes the world a safer place and shows that such crimes do not remain unpunished," European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy said in a joint statement.
"This is a major achievement in our efforts to rid the world of terrorism," they said.
Barroso and Van Rompuy said the EU would "continue to stand shoulder to shoulder with the United States, our international partners and our friends in the Muslim world" in fighting terrorism.
