Fierce clashes broke out between the army forces and al-Qaida militants in Yemen's southern Zinjibar city on Sunday, leaving three soldiers and a high-ranking officer killed and dozens of others wounded, a local military official told Xinhua.

Two groups of al-Qaida militants launched an armed attack at a military patrol in southern Zinjibar city, killing three soldiers and a high-ranking officer of the army forces, the official told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

A local doctor at the Bashuib military hospital in Aden told Xinhua that 30 soldiers injured during the clashes were receiving treatment at the hospital, some of whom were in critical condition.
