Mohamed al-Orabi, a retired diplomat and Egypt's former ambassador to Germany, was appointed foreign minister on Sunday, state media reported.
He will replace Nabil al-Araby, who from next month will become the Arab League's new secretary general, dpa reported.
Al-Orabi served as Egypt's ambassador to Germany from 2001-08. He was deputy foreign minister for economic relations until his retirement in January.
He was also Egypt's deputy ambassador to Israel from 1994-98.
Al-Orabi is the second foreign minister to be appointed since former president Hosny Mubarak stepped down on February 11 after a popular revolt.
The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces and a caretaker cabinet have since been in charge of the country.
