United Russia Party has endorsed First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as its candidate for presidency to run in the March 2, 2008 election.
Results of voting by secret ballot were announced at the party's congress Monday by its leader Boris Gryzlov.
December 4, a pool of political parties comprising United Russia, Just Russia, the Agrarian Party and the Civil Force Party made public their decision to nominate Dmitry Medvedev as candidate for presidency and the current President, Vladimir Putin, supported their initiative.
Medvedev thanked delegates to the congress for the expression of trust in him. "I'll tell you frankly your support is very important for me," he said.
Medvedev made known his confidence that he will win the election.
"Large and complicated country get the chance that we're having now probably once in a hundred years," he said. "We have an opportunity now to make Russia stronger, to move our civic society much farther forwards, and raise the efficiency of our social sphere."
"We have an opportunity to do it in real life rather than on paper, for the entire nation rather than for some of its sections," Medvedev said.
"Let's work together and I'm sure we'll win," he said. ( Itar-Tass )
