Myanmar has said it is ready to accept international relief and medical supplies, the Indian foreign ministry said Monday as it sent an aircraft carrying meals to its cyclone-hit neighbour, reported dpa.
Addressing the press in New Delhi, foreign ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna said that so far two Indian navy ships and five aircraft had delivered food, clothing, medicine, tents and other material.
"The foreign minister of Myanmar expressed gratitude for the prompt and generous assistance of the Government of India," Sarna said, adding that Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee spoke to his Myanmar counterpart U Nyan Win.
"Myanmar have also conveyed their readiness to accept international relief and medical supplies," the Indian official said.
The UN has already warned that more lives could be lost unless international aid efforts were allowed to pick up speed by the Myanmar junta.
UN officials said that disaster relief was still reaching "too few and too slowly" owing to constraints imposed on operations by the government.
India has developed close ties with Myanmar military regime over the past few years to get access to the country's hydrocarbon sources and to secure help in combatting insurgents in its north-east.
