New President of Northern Cyprus Eroglu expects settlement talks to resume in May

Turkish Cypriot Premier and National Union Party Leader Dervis Eroglu, who won Sunday's presidential election in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), said he expected extensive talks to resume in May, Anadolu Agency reported.

Eroglu told the press Monday at the TRNC Prime Ministry that elections were left behind and he expected to start talks with the Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias in May, after bringing together a negotiation delegation and making the necessary consultations.

Eroglu said the Turkish side wanted to find a solution to the Cyprus issue by the end of 2010, referring to Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan's remarks that came after the announcement of the election results, adding however that Greek Cypriot side's intentions were also important.

Eroglu's predecessor Mehmet Ali Talat and Greek Cypriot Leader Demetris Christofias got together 71 times under the extensive settlement talks, which began in September 11, 2008. The last meeting took place on March 30.

The Greek Cypriot Side wants to continue talks on the same basis from where they left off with Talat.
