Chinese authorities feared hundreds of possible casualties Saturday after a magnitude-6.6 quake struck the south-western province of Sichuan, state media reported.

The US Geological Survey revised the quake's intensity from an initially reported 6.9 magnitude. It was centred about 80 kilometres west of Linqiong city, at a depth of about 12 kilometres, dpa reported.

An 8.0 magnitude quake in Sichuan in May 2008 killed nearly 90,000 people.
