The decision to supply gas to unfriendly countries for rubles may be rescinded in the future, but for now it is the most reliable alternative for Moscow, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters, Trend reports with reference to TASS.
When asked if the gas-for-rubles arrangement could be annulled, he replied: "Certainly, if other conditions occur. In this respect, nothing is carved in stone, but under the current conditions, rubles are the most preferable and reliable option for us."
The journalists also turned the Kremlin representative’s attention to a statement Russian President Vladimir Putin had made the day before. On Thursday, the head of state noted that European countries actually received part of the gas from Russia free of charge, because they "paid in euros, which they later froze."
When asked whether the decree on payments for gas in rubles could also apply to already-supplied resources, Peskov replied: "No, it is not retroactive, of course."
