Iran negotiating with MTN on fiber optic network project

Iran is negotiating with South Africa-based multinational mobile telecommunications company MTN for cooperation in the country's fiber optic network project, Mahmoud Vaezi, Iran's ICT minister said.

Alongside with the MTN Iran also has held talks with other foreign companies for investment in the project, Vaezi said, Iran's Tasnim news agency reported Jan. 26.

He expressed hope that the replacing the copper wire network with the fiber optic will start by March, 2016.

Fiber optic is an environment to transmit data with high speed, Vaezi said, adding the project is aimed at data transmit between the Iranians with high speed and quality.

Earlier Mohsen Baqeri-Chenari, the managing director of Iranian Net Company, which is the executor of the project said that Iran will offer fiber optic internet to users in seven big cities by March 2016.

Fiber optic internet will be launched in the cities of Karaj, Tehran, Isfahan, Shiraz, Tabriz, Mashhad, and Qom, providing 500,000 access ports with 20 megabytes per second internet, Baqeri-Chenari said.

He added that the project is scheduled to be implemented over the course of two years.
