Over 100 settlements have suffered from flood in the South Kazakhstan region since the third decade of February, Kazinform reported.
According to the Regional Commission preliminary damage assessment, 12 districts, 102 settlements, 648 houses and 14 social facilities have been flooded in the South Kazakhstan region. About 14 houses, 28 sheds have been destroyed, 31 bridges and 81 road sections have suffered damage. About 85 houses and 197 sheds are in danger of destruction.
The regional authorities appealed to the government with a request to establish a commission on damage assessment and repair.
"When more than three districts suffer, it is a large-scale emergency situation. We hope that the governmental commission will be set up urgently, and we will determine the amount of damage together," the South Kazakhstan region deputy head Saken Kanybekov said.
Kanybekov said that all operational measures to eliminate flooding, as well as preventative work to strengthen potentially hazardous areas are maintained at the expense of district and regional budgets.
"But, of course, assistance from the republic will be required. About 648 houses are located in the flooded area. Thus, the sum of damage is rather big," Kanybekov said.
Now the situation has stabilized, however there is a possibility of new floods. Floods may be provoked by drastic warming or rain.
