Around 20,000 Kurds demonstrated Sunday in the Iraqi city of Khaniqin, north-east of Baghdad, to protest against a decision by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki removing the Kurdish flag from state institutions in the disputed city, security sources said, DPA reported.

The protesters chanted slogans against the ban and demanded it be reversed, they added.

One demonstrator was hospitalized with severe burns after setting himself on fire, according to the sources.

Khaniqin, one of the disputed areas between Iraq's federal and Kurdish governments, is populated by a mixture of Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen.
