BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 10. The UK is ready to champion climate finance agenda at COP29 in Baku, said the country’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld, Trend reports.
“For the last 11 months, we've been counting down, planning, and preparing. Now, it's time for action. For the next two weeks, the eyes of the world are going to be in Baku, and the UK government is here, leading by example. The UK government is here to champion domestic delivery on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, to help channel climate finance to those who need it most, and to promote green jobs and growth.
We are also here to build partnerships with COP29 Presidency Azerbaijan, with every party ready to turn climate pledges into climate progress, and with leaders from business and civil society who are key to success. The countdown is over. It's time to act,” he said in a video message.
On Monday, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be kicking off in Azerbaijan, the decision of which was made at the plenary meeting of COP28 held in Dubai in December last year.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The abbreviation COP (Conference of Parties) means “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Germany's Berlin with its secretariat in Bonn.
