Kiev’s Political Forces Fail to Agree on Rotating Use of Maydan Square for Pre-election Campaigning

The Ukraine, Kiev / Тrend corr Z. Novosvitski / The main rivals of the upcoming election (the Party of Regions and Our Ukraine) in Kiev have not yet agreed on which of them and at what time will have use of Maydan Square for pre-election campaigning.

An incident involving the supporters of the 'orange' forces of the Our Ukraine - Public Self-Defense and the 'white-blue' forces of the Party of Regions took place in the Independence Square in the Centre of Kiev in the evening of 19 September. The cause for the incident was an attempt of the 'orange' forces to set a scene for meetings in Maydan Square, the main square of the Ukraine. However, the first structures were hardly set up when the supporters of the Party of Regions came to the square and began to set up their tents in the same place. In order to prevent a possible confrontation, the parties agreed on a 'zero' variant - they both removed their equipment and tents.

There is no clarity in this situation, the Chairman of the Party of Regions' Kiev organization, Vasiliy Gorbal, said. He noted a non-constructive position of the Our Ukraine. "They send non-compromise people to negotiations. If they wanted to reach some agreements they would send the representatives that can make compromises," he said.

The 'orange' forces tried to set up a scene on both sides of Maydan Square having only a request for holding off the action, while in order to set up an instalment in public space one has to receive a special order, Gorbal said.

The negotiations are in progress but the details are not available, a representative of Our Ukraine - Public Self-Defence, Nikolai Onishchuk said. Our Ukraine's Kiev organization refused to comment on the negotiations.

The internal policy central department of Kiev city state administration appealed to the members of the election process, asking them to agree between themselves who and when will hold arrangements in Maydan Square during the last week before the elections.

No structures are being set up in Maydan, but the Party of Regions is intensively setting up tents there.
