Azerbaijan, Baku, 1 May / corr Trend K.Zarbaliyeva / Anne E. Derse, the US Ambassador to Azerbaijan, hopes that the Elections Monitoring Center (EMC) will be registered and monitor the elections. Derse made this statement during talks with journalists on 1 May.
The Central Registration Department and the Notary Office appealed to the Khatai District Court to cancel of registration of the EMC. Preparatory hearings on the appeal will be held on 6 May.
For the first time the EMC submitted its documents to the Justice Ministry on 14 March 2006. The Center was registered in February.
The Justice Ministry made its decision to cancel the registration on the grounds of vague data on founders of the organization in the constituency documents. The Ministry was not informed of the change of the organisation's legal address and the organization did not inform the State Register of its representations placed in eight cities of Azerbaijan.
Anar Mammadli, the co-founder of the organization, said that the issues mentioned by the Justice Ministry cannot be a basis for the Centre to be recognized as illegal and for its registration to be cancelled.
