Azerbaijani Candidates Nominated for Georgian Parliamentary Elections Describe Their Chances as Low

Azerbaijan, Baku, 22 May / corr. Trend J. Babayeva/ The Azerbaijani candidates nominated for Georgia's parliamentary elections describe their chances as low. Some 14 Azerbaijani candidates have been nominated from various parties of Georgia both in the majority and proportional lists.

"The parliamentary elections were undemocratic," Fazil Aliyev- the chairman of the For Georgia party, who was nominated from Christian Democratic Alliance, and Ali Babayev- the chairman of the Georgia-My Homeland Public Union, who was nominated from the Republican Party, stated to Trend on 21 May.

According to Aliyev, according to early reports, the ruling party has lost the election in the constituencies of the Azerbaijani communities.

"The fight in the Azerbaijani communities was between me and the ruling party candidate. Kvemo-Kartli is the region to which the government trusts most, and violations occur frequently in this region," he said.

According to Aliyev, the chances of victory in the majority system are limited while there are still certain chances in the proportional lists.

"The international observers in the polling stations of Kvemo-Kartli region did not fully observe the elections. The key falsifications took place after the observers left the polling stations," Aliyev said.

The candidate from the Republican party Ali Babayev stated that his hopes for victory were higher when he met with the voters.

"At present, about 60% of the people who have rights to vote are abroad in the Gardabani region. The government will win only through falsification in this region. We lost the parliamentary elections that did not meet the democratic principles," Babayev said.

According to Babayev, the elections were undemocratic not only in the Gardbani region, but also all over Georgia.

"The observers over the Azerbaijani candidates were not allowed into the polling stations. The pressure was put on Azerbaijani voters in the polling stations," Babayev said.

Only those Azerbaijanis, who have been nominated from the ruling party, are expected to gain a seat in the Georgian parliament, he added.

The Azerbaijani candidates said that they will consider the results of exit -poll as invalid.
