Azerbaijani Public and Political Forces Demand Democratic Conditions for Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 30 May / Trend corr. J.Babayeva / Over 20 political parties, NGOs and political scientists, who consider themselves as the democratic forces of Azerbaijan, demand to create democratic conditions on the threshold of the presidential elections, as stated in the joint document accepted on 29 May.

The authors of the document believe that the Election Code, which is expected to be accepted in the Parliament on 30 May, will not create feasible conditions to hold transparent and democratic elections.

"The government must take immediate steps -the arrested journalists and political prisoners should be released, entire freedom of assembly should be provided, certain prohibitions put on opposition in electron media should be cancelled, the draft on amendments and supplements into the Election Code should not be accepted, as well as no obstacles to be created to hold exit-poll and parallel calculation of votes by local and international NGOs," is stated in the document.

The document was signed by Eldar Namazov- Leader of the Public Forum For Azerbaijan, Mirmahmud Miralioglu- Chairman of Classic Popular front, Akif Shahbazov- Chairman of Open Society party, Eldaniz Guliyev- Chairman of United Intellectuals of Azerbaijan, as well as human right activists - Arzu Abdullayeva, Novella Jafaroglu Saida Gojamanli and a set of parties, NGO leaders and political scientists
