UK prepared for talks with Hezbollah

The UK government is prepared for direct talks with Hezbollah "on the backdrop of Lebanon's positive development," Reuters quoted British Foreign Office Minister Bill Rammell as saying.

The government will try to persuade Hezbollah to "end the violence" and "play a more constructive role," Rammell said.

Conservative Party representatives have already held diplomatic negotiations with Lebanese officials, including Hezbollah members, Rammell said.

The minister's statement differs from the position of the UK in 2005.

At the time, the UK said it will not negotiate with any political or military group in Lebanon.

The UK included Hezbollah in a list of "outlawed terrorist organizations" in July 2008, Reuters reported.
