UNICEF regional director arrives in Georgia

The UNICEF regional director for Central and Eastern Europe and CIS countries, Steven Allen, arrived in Georgia on a two-day-visit. Allen will become familiarized with the impact that last year's conflict had on children and the actions undertaken to improve the situation, the Georgian representative of the fund said.

The regional director will meet with women- and children-refugees and submit a new project on the water supply and improvement of the sanitary-hygiene situation.

The results of UNICEF research show that roughly 47 percent of refugees have no opportunity to use clean water in densely-populated settlements. After the conflict in August 2008, the fund assisted 778,000 children and their families who had been injured as a result of war. The organization continues to assist the population in Shida Kartli with sanitation, health, food and education.
