11 international observers registered in Azerbaijan for municipal elections

"Eleven international observers have been registered to monitor the process of voting during municipal elections," the head of foreign relations department of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan Rovzat Gasimov told Trend News on Dec. 10.

11 international observers were registered in Azerbaijan in connection with the municipal elections.

"Eleven international observers have been registered to monitor the process of voting during municipal elections," the head of foreign relations department of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan Rovzat Gasimov told Trend on Dec. 10.

Azerbaijani municipal elections are scheduled for December 23. About 15,682 members are expected to be elected for 1,718 municipalities.

Azerbaijan has registered about 32,000 candidates for municipal members. Candidates from 18 political parties have been registered for elections. Candidates refer to 30 political parties.

Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.

According to Gasimov, the registered observers are representatives of the Council of Europe,  UK and Norwegian embassies in Azerbaijan.

"The Commission continues to receive appeals from observers. It is possible that over the next few days, the number of registered international observers will increase," he said.
