Georgia is marking the 17th anniversary of the fall of Sukhumi, the capital city of Abkhazia, to Abkhazian separatists on Sept. 27, 1993 during a civil war in Georgia which ended later that year.

Georgia is marking the 17th anniversary of the fall of Sukhumi, the capital city of  Abkhazia, to Abkhazian separatists on Sept. 27, 1993 during a civil war in Georgia which ended later that year.

Georgian political and social organizations are holding various events throughout the country, including a memorial services to be held in Orthodox churches in memory of those who died.

Students at Sukhumi University paid tribute to the heroes who died in fight for the unity of Georgia, an event that was organized by the Government of Abkhazia. The Prime Minister of Abkhazia, Gia Baramia, and the members of the government members will lay wreath at a memorial later.

An Abkhazian mother, who a few days ago fled the breakaway region because of persecution, will address Abkhazians in the Abkhaz language at the event.

A peace rally was held last night on the Ganmukhuri bridge on the border with Abkhazia.

A public rally, organized by the Georgian Legion will be held at 2pm in Victory Park in Tbilisi. The event will be attended by representatives of public and political parties.
