Possible worsening of Egypt's relations with Israel could negatively affect the situation in the whole region, the Knesset member from the Arab bloc "National Democratic Union" believes.
"Egypt should continue the policy started during Mubarak's presidency towards Israel, since the deterioration of relations with Israel is not advantageous for the region," Haneen Zoabi told Trend over phone from Tel Aviv.
Large-scale anti-governmental protests were held in Egypt. Thousands of people in different cities across the country went to the streets, demanding President Hosni Mubarak's resignation and the dissolution of parliament. The unrests in the country have killed at least 300 people and injuring over 4,000. A one million march passed at Tahrir Square in Cairo to demand the resignation of President Mubarak. As a result, on Friday, Mubarak announced about his resignation. The leadership passed to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
Zoabi said that after the developments in Egypt, the Israeli authorities are concerned about the fate of the Israeli-Egyptian relations as well as fear for radical Islamists' coming to power.
"Coming of radical Islamists to power in Egypt would lead to a deterioration and rupture of relations with Israel, which, in turn, will adversely affect both the Arab-Israeli relations, and the country's foreign policy as well," she said.
Zoabi believes that Egypt involved in the process of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, should lead a smart policy, given regional and domestic political interests.
Zoabi added that Israel supports the continuation of partnership relations with Egypt, regardless of who will lead the country.
"A person, who really realizes the prospects of development of relations with Israel and the Western world, must come to power in Egypt," Zoabi stressed.
