Ex-Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze is against calling Russia an "occupant."

"We will not achieve anything by calling Russia an enemy of Georgia, as we will only facilitate the work of those forces in Russia that are acting against Georgia," Shevardnadze said in an interview today with the Asaval-Dasavali weekly.

Shevardnadze called on the authorities to adopt a more balanced concept during their discussions in parliament.

"It is impossible to focus only on Russia, as the occupier," he stressed.

Shevardnadze does not Georgia as a "normal state" today.

"No normal state could create such intense, hostile relations with their neighbors," he said.

He added that the large number of hungry people also pose a danger to Georgia's stability.

Shevardnadze urged the authorities to take this into account when developing their national security concept, which is under discussion in parliament.
