Turkmen embassy in Azerbaijan prepares for presidential elections (PHOTO)

The event dedicated to the upcoming presidential elections in Turkmenistan scheduled for February 12 has been held in Baku today. The event was organized by the Turkmen Embassy in Azerbaijan.

The event was dedicated to the facilitation of transparent democratic vote in the elections, as well as coverage of the voting process for voters. Turkmen citizens living in Azerbaijan, including students studying at Azerbaijani universities attended the meeting.

"The idea of self-governing the people is on the basis of the democracy," Turkmen Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador to Azerbaijan Toyly Komekov said at a meeting. "So, the Turkmen citizens have a special role in the process of free and alternative state elections."

He said that the purpose of today's meeting is to facilitate the transparent democratic vote in the elections, coverage of the voting process for voters.

Ambassador also stressed that Turkmen citizens familiarized with the general provisions of the foundations of the electoral system, the law on the presidential elections and the election procedure.

"The Turkmen Constitution, the law on the presidential elections, the election procedure f and the organization of voting at polling stations formed at diplomatic missions and other relevant legal documents are a legal base and the main regulatory element of the Turkmen Embassy in the preparation and organization of elections for the highest post," the diplomat said.

The Turkmen official presidential elections are scheduled for February 12. The constituency for Turkmen citizens to vote in Azerbaijan before the appointed time will be opened at the Turkmen embassy from February 2.

A decision was unanimously made to establish a precinct election commission to ensure all the conditions corresponding to the relevant international standards for all citizens to have the right to freely vote.

This decision was made upon the Foreign Ministry's proposal and on the basis of the meeting held in Baku on December 6, 2011 with the participation of Turkmen citizens and the embassy staff.

"An important objective of the precinct election commission under the Turkmen embassy is to explain the legitimate rights of every citizen to participate in the elections and electing of a worthy candidate for the highest state post," he said. Of course, this was fixed by the Turkmen constitutional acts."

A number of participants also spoke at the meeting. They urged the compatriots to actively participate in the upcoming elections.

The numerous achievements, as well as ongoing large-scale changes that promote Turkmenistan's entry into economically developed and politically stable countries, by strengthening peaceful, happy and prosperous life of the people were discussed. About 200 Turkmen citizens living in Azerbaijan are expected to participate in the elections.

More than 100 people appealed to the embassy by expressing a desire to participate in the elections. They are students and Turkmen citizens, temporarily working in Azerbaijan. These meetings will be held at universities to clarify the rights of citizens. Turkmen ambassador also stressed the possibility of voting at special places if anybody can not come to the constituency, organized in the embassy, for objective reasons.
