Syria says Israeli jets hit targets near Damascus

The Syrian army said on Wednesday that Israeli aircraft had struck "centres for scientific research" north-west of Damascus, near the border with Lebanon, dpa reported.

"Israeli warplanes infiltrated our airspace this morning and scored direct hits on centres for scientific research responsible for enhancing the resistance and self-defence in Jarmaya on the outskirts of Damascus," it said in a statement carried by state-run media.

The statement added that the airstrikes occurred after rebel fighters tried and failed on several occasions to overrun the sites in Jarmaya, which lies some 14 kilometres from the border with Lebanon.
