Anti-Semitism never took place in Azerbaijan - State Committee

Baku, Azerbaijan, Feb.2

By Ilkin Izzet - Trend:

Azerbaijan is the only country in the world where not a single case of anti-Semitism was registered, the chairman of the State Committee for Work with Diaspora of Azerbaijan Nazim Ibrahimov said Feb. 2 during the meeting with a delegation of the American Jewish Committee (AJC), which is on a visit to Baku.

If similar cases may be encountered even in the US, a warm and caring attitude towards the Jews has always been shown in Azerbaijan, he said.

He went on to add that cooperation between Azerbaijan and the American Jewish Committee, which was established a few years ago, expands every year.

The head of the state committee expressed hope that this cooperation will develop dynamically in the future as well.

"The American Jewish Committee has played a special role in the development of bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the United States, Israel, and the Jewish communities in several countries," said Ibrahimov.

In turn, the head of the delegation, executive director of the American Jewish Committee David Harris said that the visits of AJC, which began in 2008, will continue in the future as well.

He went on to add that the AJC attaches great importance to developing relations with Azerbaijan.

In addition, Harris praised the fact that representatives of different nations peacefully coexist in Azerbaijan.

He expressed satisfaction with the high level of relations of Baku and Washington, as well as Azerbaijan and Israel.

The executive director also noted the need to further promote Azerbaijan in the world.

"We need to promote Azerbaijan worldwide," said Harris. "The importance of Azerbaijan for the United States as a strategic country, relations with Israel, Azerbaijan's role in energy security of Europe, secular Azerbaijani society and its tolerance are promoted not at the required level. We must do everything possible to promote these factors in the United States and the world."

The parties also noted the importance of holding regular meetings that will contribute to the development of bilateral relations.

In addition, the sides exchanged views on prospects of cooperation between the State Committee and AJC.
