Lawyer: ECHR should expedite consideration of issue of Azerbaijani hostages

Baku, Azerbaijan, May 2

By Samir Ali - Trend:

The issue of torture against Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov, who were taken hostage by Armenian military while visiting their native lands in Azerbaijan’s occupied Kalbajar district, is in center of the attention, Dilgam Asgarov's lawyer, chairman of the Azerbaijan Bar Association Anar Bagirov told Trend on May 2.

The lawyer noted relevant information is regularly sent to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

"We hope that the ECHR will soon make a fair decision on this issue. This issue worries every Azerbaijani citizen. I think the ECHR, while remaining committed to its principles, should expedite consideration of this issue," Bagirov emphasized.

Noting that documents are being prepared over the transfer of video that Guliyev and Asgarov sent to their families during the latest meeting with representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Bagirov said these documents will soon be collected and sent to the ECHR.

During an operation in July 2014 in Shaplar village of Azerbaijani Kalbajar district occupied by Armenia, the Armenian special forces killed an Azerbaijani, Hasan Hasanov, and took hostage two other Azerbaijanis, Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov. A "criminal case" was initiated against them. Afterwards, a "court" sentenced Asgarov to life imprisonment and Guliyev to 22 years in prison.
