Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 24

Trend:

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov and his Armenian counterpart Zohrab Mnatsakanyan participating in the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly, will meet Sept. 26 in New York with the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs (Igor Popov of Russia, Stephane Visconti of France and Andrew Schofer of the US), Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said in a message Sept. 24.

Personal Representative of the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office Andrzej Kasprzyk will attend the meeting.

During the meeting, the negotiation process on the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will be discussed.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
