Speaker: Council of Europe Highly Assesses Processes in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr. A.Alizade / "The Council of Europe highly assesses the processes in Azerbaijan," said the Speaker of Milli Majlis [Azerbaijani Parliament], Oktay Asadov, commenting on the statement of MP Panah Huseyn that Azerbaijan will face intensive discussions at the spring session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). "Unfortunately we have an opinion that the Council of Europe will be daunting for Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is a full-right member to the Council of Europe. Why should we then fear the Council of Europe? We are participating in the events of the Council of Europe," Mr. Asadov said. He also expressed his concerns regarding the dissemination of such information in the press. He stressed that the information that Azerbaijan should face pressure from the Council of Europe does not correspond to reality. "The Organization highly assesses the processes occurring in Azerbaijan," Mr. Asadov underlined.

The spring session of the PACE will take place between 16 and 20 April in Strasbourg. The session will examine the issues regarding Azerbaijan's obligations undertaken before the Council of Europe.
