Headquarters of GUAM Parliamentary Assembly to be Set up in Baku

Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / The headquarters of the Parliamentary Asembly of the Organization for Democracy and Economic Development - GUAM (Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, Moldova) will be set up in Baku, the chairman of the Democratic Reforms Party (DRP), a member of the Azerbaijani parliamentary commission on international relations and inter-parliamentary bonds, Asim Mollazadeh, reported during a press conference on 24 May.

Speaking on the importance of co-operation of the four countries within the framework of GUAM, the MP stated that the organization would maintain relationships with other countries including Russia, Turkey and European countries. Mollazadeh noted that the activities of GUAM are not of an anti-Russian nature. "These countries are represented in the CIS as well. The GUAM member countries support the development, reforms, and integration into Europe. The organization does not oppose any country," the chairman said.

Mollazadeh also touched upon Iran and Turkey. He noted that Turkey as a country that separates religion from state has the right to enter the European Union. In his opinion, the French President, Nicola Sarcozy, who is opposing it should reconsider his position.

The MP added that the UN had to make corresponding decisions on Iran, as the threat of implementing the nuclear program could lead to irreversible tragedies in the region. At the same time Mollazadeh opposes military intervention into Iran's nuclear policy.
