778 Iranians released from 25 foreign prisons

A total of 778 Iranian citizens have been released from 25 foreign prisons last solar year (end March 20, 2011), IRNA reported quoting Deputy Iranian Foreign Minister for Consular, Parliamentary and Iranian Affairs Hassan Qashqavi as saying.

Some 30 percent of the released Iranian citizens were transferred to Iran after their release, he said.

Iran signed agreement with many countries on terms of extradition and release of citizens.

Qashqavi said more than 60 Iranian citizens are kept in U.S. prisons, including 11 prisoners arrested on political reasons.

More than 80 percent of Iranian citizens are convicted in foreign countries on charges of drug trafficking specially in Southeast Asia. Ninety Iranian citizens are serving their terms at Indonesian prisons on charges of drug trafficking.

He noted a number of Iranian citizens are at Azerbaijan, India and Oman prisons on charges of illegal border crossing.
