In 2011 in Azerbaijan 232 employees of the Penitentiary Service were brought to various disciplinary proceedings, 35 employees were dismissed from the judiciary bodies, head of the Penitentiary Service under the Ministry of Justice Madat Guliyev said at a operative meeting in the Main Department of the Service dedicated to work and shortcomings in the 2011 and upcoming tasks .

Chiefs of correctional facilities №№ 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, educational institution, prison, detention centers №№ 2,3, correctional facilities of district type №№ 2,7,8,9 and 12 as well the head of automotive services were dismissed from their positions, Mr Guliyev said. Some of them were removed from service in the judiciary bodies.

As a result of co-operation between the Penitentiary Service and the law enforcement agencies 183 crimes were solved, including a number of previously committed, but not solved crimes, the chief of the service said.

As a result of operational measures carried out in penitentiary facilities in 2011, 21,592 manat, 179.2 liters of alcoholic beverages, 197 mobile phones, various narcotic substances weighing 333.329 grams, were found and confiscated and measures, stipulated by legislation were taken on these cases.

Summing up the work of the Penitentiary Service in 2011, Mr Guliyev noted that progress has been made in improving prison conditions, the construction of new correctional facilities meeting international standards, ensuring the rule of law in the prison system, strengthening discipline and order, strengthening control over the activities of subordinate structures as well as eliminating the existing shortcomings.
