Azerbaijani MP Stops Hunger-Strike

Azerbaijani, Baku / Trend corr K. Zarbaliyeva / Elchin Behbudov, the chairman of the Anti-Torture Committee of Azerbaijan, reported on 7 May that MP Huseyn Abdullayev, who is being kept in the medical unit, has suspended his hunger-strike on 5 May. Behbudov noted that he had visited the detainee.

The MP suspended the hunger-strike at his mother's request. Mahir Dumanov, a doctor of the Central Clinic Hospital, visited Abdullyev in the unit and began medical treatment. Behbudov stated that Abdullayev had no complaints of the living conditions and treatment in the prison. The chairman reported that the MP had serious health problems.

Abdullayev's immunity as deputy was annulled at the request of the Prosecutor General during an irregular meeting of the Milli Majlis (Azerbaijani parliament) held on 19 March. He was detained on the same day. The MP is being held in Investigation Cell 1 in the district of Bayil in Baku. The Investigation Department on Grave Crimes of the Prosecutor General's Office of Azerbaijan has instituted criminal proceedings in connection to compliance with Articles 132 (assault and battery) and 221.2.2 (hooliganism) of the Criminal Code. An investigation is in progress.
