Azerbaijan, Baku / Тrend corr S. Ilhamgizi / A working commission has been established to unite the World Azerbaijanis Congress (WAC) and negotiations are in progress, the Chairman of WAC, Gulamrza Sabri Tabrizi, reported on 20 August.
WAC split in 2003 after a number of members, opposing the activities of the former Chairman, Javad Darahti, split from the organization and formed their own group. They also functioned as WAC, but later changed their name to Democratic WAC.
Tabrizi stated that a joint commission involving four people from each side had been established to discuss the issues of merging. "I will not interfere with this process, let them discuss the matter and reach an agreement," Tabrizi added.
According to Tabrizi, after a WAC congress was held this year, many scientists entered the organization and some changes were made in the Charter. "At present the WAC includes 12 professors. Work to increase the activities of WAC is in progress and meetings with representatives of foreign countries are held via the internet. I am satisfied with the general course of the activities," Tabrizi reported.
WAC was founded in the United States in 1997. The organization is fighting for protection of the rights of Azerbaijanis residing in the world, as well as for independence of South Azerbaijan (Iranian province).
