BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 12. Agriculture Minister Majnun Mammadov met with the delegation headed by Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Qu Dongyu, who took part in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), Trend reports via Azerbaijan's Ministry of Agriculture.
Meanwhile, it was noted that during the meeting held at the pavilion of the Ministry of Agriculture at COP29, the importance of projects implemented within the framework of joint cooperation with FAO was emphasized, and prospects of cooperation were discussed.
Greeting the guests, Minister Majnun Mammadov touched upon the importance of holding COP29 in Azerbaijan and talked of measures taken to minimize the impact of climate change on the agricultural sector.
Furthermore, it was noted that the Azerbaijani government closely cooperates with international organizations to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization is one of the most important international partners of Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan attaches great importance to cooperation with FAO in the field of agriculture and is interested in continuing this cooperation.
The Director-General of FAO Qu Dongyu, in turn, noted that he was glad to establish high-level ties between Azerbaijan and the organization. He noted that to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals amid the impact of global challenges, it is crucial to create more sustainable agro-food systems and expand global cooperation in these directions. Such events as COP29 make an important contribution to the work of prioritizing the development of the agricultural sector. Qu Dongyu emphasized that the projects aimed at sustainable development of the agricultural sector and the formation of an effective and professional base of specialists will continue to be supported.
The parties touched upon the importance of continuing cooperation within the framework of the FAO-Azerbaijan Partnership Program and discussed issues of further increasing productivity in the agricultural sphere, rational use of land and water resources, digitalization of agriculture, improvement of education, training, and research works in the agricultural sphere.
In the end, a wide exchange of views was held on topics of mutual interest.
At the conclusion of the meeting, a Declaration of Intent was signed on strengthening cooperation within the framework of the "Baku Climate Harmony Initiative for Farmers," included in the Sustainable Transformation for Food and Agriculture (FAST) initiative within COP29.
The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will last until November 22, was held on November 11 at the Baku Olympic Stadium. The event is the largest organized by Azerbaijan to date and, for the first time, is being held in the region of Azerbaijan.

New Collective Quantitative Goal (NCQG) on climate finance.
In addition to being a top priority that creates the conditions for action, creating climate finance will also help fulfill the 1.5°C pledge by bringing everyone together.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.
A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
