Since March 1, a special centre for training bus drivers will operate in the Azerbaijan Ministry of Transport. The Centre will grant certifications to bus drivers, the Passenger Transport of Baku Department head Javid Garayev said.

These measures are taken to increase the quality and safety in passenger transportation, Garayev added.

"Bus drivers should undergo special trainings and to obtain certification. Since March 1, the centre will start working. Currently, a special program to train drivers are being designed," Grayev added.

Every bus driver will have to obtain certification.

To the end of the year the Azerbaijani government plans to replace small capacity buses with large ones.

In 2008, private companies acquired 910 buses for this purpose.

In autumn 2008, the Azerbaijani Ministry of Transport prohibited the traffic of small capacity buses in central streets of Baku.
