The "Fili" ship was rescued by Azerbaijani experts after suffering a disaster in the Caspian Sea. The vessel is undergoing repairs at a local shipyard, a Azerbaijani State Maritime Administration source said today. The ship's owner Vagn Shipping already paid for the repairs.
The ship will continue sailing to the Iranian port of Nowshahr after the Russian Maritime Shipping Register inspects the ship for navigation safety and compliance with international conventions, the source said.
The management of the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center from the Astrakhan Port turned to Azerbaijan for assistance Oct. 26 at 12:30. Two specialized Azerbaijani vessels "Ayla" and "Avior" were sent to the disaster area to rescue the ship.
Fili sails under the Russian flag. The ship has been taken to the SOCAR Caspian Sea Oil Fleet Port.
The preliminary cause of the accident was heavy storms, which flooded the cockpit and engine compartment and shut down the ship's electrical equipment.
The ship carried 1,781 tons of cargo, including 1,381 tons of stock steel and 400 tons of paper.
There are no victims or injuries among the 11-member crew.
The Russian vessel Sarmat suffered a disaster for the same resons and was rescued by experts from Azerbaijan in late 2008. After undergoing repairs in Baku, the ship set sail. But a trial later ensued discussing the Russian shipowner's delayed payments for the repair services.
