The Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources has proposed a project on the construction of a sewer tunnel along the seaside boulevard designed to stop the direct discharge of wastewater into the Caspian Sea.

This was said to reporters on Wednesday by the Minister Huseyn Bagirov.

"The monitoring of the Ecology Ministry discovered the draining of wastewater into the Caspian Sea in 14 locations along the Boulevard. Most of them are not registered and pollute the environment," Bagirov said.

According to him, in order to address these issues, it would be useful to build a tunnel on the part of the boulevard connected to the sea which could transport waste from the shore out of the city. The holding of large scale excavation work is often impossible as the communications are very old, so it is advisable not to repair existing lines and build new tunnels.

"Part of this water can be directed to water treatment installations in Hovsan, another part to new, modern installations which can be constructed as part of the work on building a new sea port in Alat. Capacity of installations in Hovsan is not enough, so we need to extend the tunnel to Alyat, "Bagirov said.

According to him, the tunnel will prevent direct discharge of waste of such a large city as Baku into the Caspian Sea. Bagirov said this is the most effective way to solve the problem.

He added the issue of tunnel construction is being discussed with the relevant government agencies.
