The smart performance of Iran's shipping lines has left those who imposed sanctions on the country confused, the Tasnim News agency quoted he Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) Managing Director Mohammad Hossein Dajmar as saying.

The illogical and baseless sanctions of the West against the country have targeted the economic infrastructures he said, adding that although IRISL has made every effort to deal with the sanctions, their negative effects on the activity of shipping lines cannot be ignored.

He added that IRISL is currently active with 148 ships, all of them are owned by the organisation.

Despite all the existing restrictions, IRISL is planning to add a number of new ships to its fleet, he noted.

The U.S. National Defence Authorisation Act (NDAA), which came into effect on July 1, blacklists Iran's shipping, shipbuilding, energy and port management sectors.

The latest measures build on previous sanctions which targeted Iran's banking sector and key oil exports to try to force Tehran to negotiate on a nuclear programme it says is peaceful but which Western states fear has military aims.
