The parliament of Turkmenistan considered and approved the draft resolution on the ratification of the Protocol on Biological Diversity to the Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea, the government of Turkmenistan said.

The protocol was signed in 2014 at one of the forums in Ashgabat. This document is expected to contribute to the development of protected areas and the protection of rare species of biological diversity at the national and regional levels.

The legal framework for the protection of the Caspian Sea - United Nations Framework Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the Caspian Sea (Tehran Convention) and a mechanism of its implementation were prepared and agreed upon as part of the Caspian Environment Programme. Turkmenistan together with the Caspian-littoral countries has been actively involved in its implementation since 1995.

The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland water reservoir having an oceanic origin.
