Uzbekistan opening doors for e-commerce, Amazon willing in

Amazon, one of the world's largest online retailers, is planning to enter the market of Uzbekistan, Uzbek media reported on May 18 citing Minister of Foreign Trade Jamshid Khojayev, who was a member of the Uzbek delegation during the Uzbek president’s official visit to the US on May 15-17.

“This company has expressed interest in our market for the first time. We have already achieved some progress. We are currently holding negotiations with the management of Amazon and are working out draft memorandums, providing for joint development of road-maps on entering Uzbek market,” Khojayev noted

The Uzbek side is also planning to prepare road-maps on development of e-commerce in Uzbekistan and expansion of Uzbek entrepreneurs’ access to global trade platforms and e-payment systems. A memorandum of understanding was signed with Openbucks e-payment company, which will help developing e-commerce in Uzbekistan.

To ensure uninterrupted access of Uzbek goods to the US market, an agreement with the WCC International import-export company has also been achieved on realization of a project on certification of Uzbek products in line with international regulations and standards. The sides also considered implementation of the National Organic Program for cotton cultivation.

The trade turnover between Uzbekistan and the US reached $210.2 million in 2017.

Most popular among the Uzbek export was sphere of services with 71.4-percent share, mechanical equipment with 15.7 percent, dried pepper with 3.3 percent, and vegetable and fruit products with 3.1 percent. Uzbekistan mostly imports from the US pharmaceuticals, mechanical and electronic equipment, plastic goods, optical devices, products from resin and rubber, vehicles and synthetic fiber.
