By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

The construction of a shipping canal in Istanbul will be launched in November 2018, the Turkish Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure told Trend Aug. 31.

The last preparatory work is underway to launch the construction.

The length of the canal will be 43 kilometers.

A special agency will also be created to monitor the work of the canal after its commissioning.

The purpose of constructing the Istanbul Canal is to reduce the burden of the Bosphorus Strait, as well as to prevent environmental and man-made disasters in one of the most intense sea routes in the world.

The depth of the Istanbul Canal, according to plans, will be 25 meters. The canal will run parallel to the Bosphorus and will actually make the European part of Istanbul an island and separate it from Europe.
