Iran will expand sowing areas for medicinal herbs on border zones, said Iran's Minister of Agriculture Mahmoud Hojjati.

He made the remarks during the ceremony of launching 486 projects in the agricultural sector of Oshnavieh in Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province, Fars news agency reported.

The minister stressed the necessity of building more greenhouses in the country with government support.

“West Azerbaijan Province has many advantages in the sphere of agricultural production. It is necessary to improve the production chain and industrial process in the province so that to ensure exports of agricultural products,” said Hojjati.

In the first seven months of the current Iranian year (started March 21), Iran exported 3.673 million tons of agricultural products worth $3.351 billion.

Compared to the same period of previous year, the exports increased 16.5 percent in terms of value and 18 percent in terms of weight.

In last six years, there has been a growth in agricultural exports, excluding raisins and pistachios.
