Over 100 customs officers fired due to corruption in Azerbaijan this year

Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee fired over 100 employees due to corruption in 2018, Chairman of the Committee Safar Mehdiyev told reporters in Baku Dec. 19, Trend reports.
He said that in total, over 30 facts of corruption in the customs system were revealed this year.
Mehdiyev stressed that the committee will continue the fight against corruption in the customs authorities.
He also touched upon the fight against smuggling of goods, noting that over 500 criminal cases were initiated on these facts during the year. As a result of the measures taken, 1.2 tons of drugs were seized, he said.
As for the future activities of the committee, he noted that trade facilitation, as well as minimization of contacts between customs officers and business representatives will be the main objectives of the committee.
