The Acting Permanent Representative of the UN Development Program in Nukus (Uzbekistan) handed over agricultural equipment and machinery to the Forestry Committee of Uzbek Karakalpakstan region, as well as to cooperative communities, Trend reports via Uzbek media.

All equipment will be used when performing forest reclamation works on the dried bottom of the Aral Sea and to preserve and improve the productivity of pastures.

Tractors, mowers, balers to strengthen the forage base, water pumps to ensure the irrigation were handed over to representatives of cooperative communities in order to increase productivity and restore degraded pastures.

The main objective of this project is to create climate-resilient agricultural and livestock farms in the most vulnerable regions of Uzbekistan in terms of drought impact.

The project pilot sites are located in Karakalpakstan. As a measure for adaptation to climate change at the landscape level, with the support of the project, 10 pasture cooperatives were first established in Karakalpakstan.

Their main task is to organize grazing in rural communities, effective pasture management, restoration and improvement of degraded land. The cooperatives located in the Kegeyliy, Takhtakupyr, Chimbay, Kanlykul and Muynak districts are involved in 43,455 people.

The creation of cooperatives allowed the organization of new jobs and work to improve knowledge and skills in order to ensure the resilience of local communities in conditions of increased drought risk.
