By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

Japanese Sumitomo Corporation is implementing a project to build a gas turbine power plant in Turkmenabat city (Lebap region, Turkmenistan), Trend reports referring to the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper.

At this stage, the installation of open switchgears for the new plant is being completed.

The plant will consist of three Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems gas turbine units, each with capacity of 144 megawatts, according to the report. Turkey’s Ronesans Holding will build an office building with an automated management system. Sumitomo acts as a general contractor in this project.

The power plant, with capacity of 432 megawatts, will become the tenth generating facility built in Turkmenistan since the beginning of the century.

The commissioning of the power plant in 2021 will become an important step in implementing a strategy to increase the annual amount of electricity produced in Turkmenistan to 33 billion kilowatt-hours.

The funds for the project implementation will be provided by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and other Japanese financial institutions, with which the Turkmen State Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs concluded loan agreements in the amount of $152.6 million and 13.1 billion Japanese yen.

Capacity-building of the industry will contribute to a further increase in the export of Turkmen electricity, primarily to Afghanistan.
