Iran announces number of imported mobile phones

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 16

More than 738,000 mobile phones have been imported to Iran since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 20, 2020) to date (May 16), said Spokesman for Islamic Republic of Iran Customs Administration (IRICA) Rouhollah Latifi, Trend reports citing IRICA.

According to Latifi, the value of imported mobile phones exceeded $119 million.

Latifi added that the imported mobile phones were released into the country on the basis of the necessary documents. The documents of some of the imported mobile phones were submitted a few months ago.

The official said that since the beginning of the year to date (May 16), documents have been submitted for the import of 305,000 mobile phones worth $37 million. Some of these mobile phones have been imported into the country and some are in customs.

According to report of the IRICA, a total of more than 9.79 million mobile phones were imported in the first 11 months of last year (March 21, 2019 to February 19, 2020).

Iran is one of the countries heavily affected by the rapidly-spreading coronavirus. According to recent reports from the Iranian officials, over 118,300 people have been infected 6,937 people have already died. Meanwhile, over 93,100 have reportedly recovered from the disease.

The country continues to apply strict measures to contain the further spread. Reportedly, the disease was brought to Iran by a businessman from Iran's Qom city, who went on a business trip to China, despite official warnings. The man died later from the disease.

The Islamic Republic only announced its first infections and deaths from the coronavirus on Feb. 19.
