By Ilkin Seyfaddini - Trend:

Russia exported over 214,000 tons of sugar to Uzbekistan in the first half of 2020 which is more than total sugar exports of Russia to Uzbekistan in 2019, representative of Russian Union of Sugar Producers told Trend.

According to preliminary data of the Union, during the first half of 2020, Russia's sugar exports to Uzbekistan amounted to $85 million (which is 43.6 percent more than in 2019).

"In 2019, Uzbekistan received more than 130,000 tons of sugar from Russia in the amount of $48 million. The maximum was fixed in March 2020, when Russia exported more than 53,000 tons of sugar to Uzbekistan," the message said.

In May 2020, it was reported that the Angren Shakar LLC plant produced hundreds of tons of sugar, which was being stored idle at warehouses. According to the plant workers, demand for local sugar has fallen after cheaper sugar was brought to the Uzbek market from abroad.

But according to the source in Russian Union of Sugar Producers, demand for local sugar in Uzbekistan has fallen after the government of the country decided to cancel excise tax on white sugar.

The two largest sugar factories in Uzbekistan, Angren Shakar LLC and Khorezm Shakar LLC, have ceased operations in July 2020.
