Turkmenistan, Afghanistan intend to strengthen co-op in use of transboundary water resources

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 23

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Turkmenistan and Afghanistan called for further strengthening and development of cooperation in the field of shared use of transboundary water resources, Trend reports with reference to Turkmenistan’s State News Agency.

This was said during the fourth meeting of the Coordination Commission on Water Management Issues between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.

Special importance was attached to the discussion of issues of interaction between the relevant departments of the two countries on the coordinated use of Amu Darya drains and the Murghab and Tejen rivers.

The main sources of water resources for agriculture and industry, electricity production, and the supply of drinking water to the population are rivers in Central Asia. And almost all of them are cross-border.

Water diplomacy is a significant vector of Turkmenistan's foreign policy. International initiatives are aimed at enhancing regional and interregional dialogue on the entire spectrum of this issue.

In particular, this concerns the development of a mutually acceptable mechanism for the integrated and balanced use of transboundary water resources.
