WB Implements Long-Term Program on Ecology Development in Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan, Baku / Trend corr. I.Khalilova / The World Bank is ready to allocate around $100mln to finance the first stage of the long-term program on ecology-cleaning in the Absheron Peninsula, stated WB vice-president on Central Asia and Europe, Shigeo Katsu, during the press-conference in Baku.

Katsu did not declare the cost of the program, as the program envisaged implementing different measures in several stages including domestic waste in Balakhani, purification of sewage and oil polluted territories. There are plans to examine, implement pilot project, purchase of equipment during the first stage. The project may be approved in 2008 fiscal year.

WB mission headed by Ani Daskupta visit Baku to 20 December in order to develop the project.

According to preliminary reports, from 10,000 to 30,000 hectares of land is polluted in Azerbaijan.
