The State Oil Company of the Azerbaijani Republic (SOCAR) will start exploratory drilling on a perspective gas condensate Umid field in the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian Sea in May, a source from SOCAR said.

The main goal of exploratory drilling is to increase gas production in the country.

"The platform [Unid-1] is being constructed. The drilling will be launched in May," the source said.

The construction of the platform was delayed due to unstable weather conditions.

SOCAR geologists assess the total gas reserves in the field at 300 billion cubic meters.

Umid-1 platform built on the base of unfinished Chiraq-6 platform is the largest facility within the program with a height of 71 meters. The platform will be installed 15km of Bulla Deniz field at the depth of 58 meters. A total of six gas wells are expected to be drilled from the platform.
